What to Expect on Your First Visit

For your first appointment, please arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment. Payment will be collected at the beginning of your appointment.

Please wear comfortable athletic clothing, as well as athletic shoes and socks, for your Physical Therapy appointment.

Your initial Physical Therapy/Hand Therapy appointment will start with a private conversation between you and your therapist.  The therapist will discuss the following:

  • Your medical history
  • Your current problems/complaints
  • Pain intensity, what aggravates and eases the problem
  • How this is impacting your daily activities or your functional limitations
  • Your goals with physical therapy
  • Medications, tests, and procedures related to your health

He/she will work with you to assess your overall movement history, your medical history, and your goals moving forward. Your therapist will then perform a thorough physical evaluation.  The physical evaluation will let the therapist know what your movement issues are.

Your therapist will be able to specifically address your movement issues which are typically the cause of your pain.  By combining both treatment for the injured tissue and addressing the underlying movement issues, you will have a complete plan for returning back to life’s activities.

The first visit lasts approximately around 60 minutes.  Your therapist will work to create a home exercise program with you and to schedule follow up visits.  The home exercise program is a key component to your success because the practice that you do in between visits further propels you ahead to achieving your goals.

Your Physical Therapist or Hand Therapist may be able to diagnose your problem at your initial evaluation. In some cases, your Therapist may refer you to an Orthopaedic Surgeon or another medical office for imaging or other testing. We have close relationships with the best physicians in Los Angeles & Orange County.  If we cannot help you, we work to connect you with the medical professionals who can.
